Thanks Brad. The key that I've found is to increase effort in the discovery
phases - needs identification and documentation plus solution exploration
(but before calling vendors and giving them your contact details) and
reducing the back-n-forth with vendors. Buyers needs to maintain control of
the process and not hand over the keys so easily to vendors. I'm convinced
that "change" in the very entriched world of buying and selling can and will
happen in the marketplace. All the best to you!

Good post Keith. I like the "no-nonsense" advice about buying software. A good tool might be a matrix which tracks your unique needs against the different vendor options. I wish I would have known you 15 years ago. Most companies not only waste valuable time searching for software, but they do a poor job of documenting their needs. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks John for the great comment. As you know, nonprofits have the responsibility of being good stewards of their various resources. This requires discipline and diligence. As the saying goes, "if you buy cheap, you buy twice." Purchasing software that is critical to business operations is not something you want to look back on and be disappointed in.

You see, this is where you need to be extra careful when deciding what nonprofit accounting software you are going to purchase. You need to do a background check first on the product and see whether it has good quality. It is also advisable to check if there is a user feedback available. Software or not, you have to take into consideration how fast transactions are processed. You do not want to waste all of your time, effort, and money if the software you purchased has gone wrong.

These sites can't really do the "hard work" and in some cases aren't comprehensive enough but in certain situations they can help a business gauge what's out there and get some preliminary details that help kickstart the search process. Also, some of them have really helpful centralized resource references for research.

Great points. It's interesting...for some folks finding the "right" software isn't the end goal, but rather streamlining business operations through systems integration.
